The research project
Dietary and Intestinal Parasites from Victorian Reptiles: Comparison between Disturbed and Undisturbed Habitats.
The original project flyer lists research permit number 10011152. Contact Reptiles Victoria for current arrangements.
Objectives
Collect stomach contents from Victorian reptiles and compare diets and intestinal parasites between disturbed and undisturbed habitats.
How the project works
The project uses reptiles that have sustained fatal injuries and are deceased, or have been appropriately euthanised. Specimens are double-bagged, labelled with where and how the animal was injured, and stored in a freezer. Reptiles Victoria is then notified.
Volunteers can help collect samples, and trained volunteers carry out necropsies to examine the specimens.
How you can help
Contact the team first to discuss whether a specimen is suitable and arrange collection or drop-off. This project concerns deceased specimens; members of the public are not asked to euthanise animals or perform necropsies.
-
Place the specimen in a ziplock bag and double-bag it.
-
Label it with the project sticker, or write the details in pencil on paper and place the paper inside the bag.
-
Keep the labelled specimen in a freezer, as described in the flyer, and contact Reptiles Victoria to arrange collection or drop-off.
Include these label details
Date · Research permit number · Species · Cause of death · Location.
